09:10 AM - 09:50 AM CASE STUDY: Hong Kong MTR: Updating the Signaling System of the East Rail Line in 2 Hour Nightly Intervals

Hong Kong’s MTR serves nine lines which intersect Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. It’s most recent upgrades to the East Rail Line involve laying approximately 2000km of cable. In doing so, this signaling upgrade should ensure greater train throughput than it is currently capable of. Moreover, it is achieving this task in only nightly intervals of two hours. This session will discuss: —
  • A review of the reasons behind why it chose to upgrade the signals along the East Rail Line —
  • How it is coordinating the upgrades with rail operations
  • Strategies for time management and task prioritization to ensure the most can be completed in a two-hour interval

Advanced Train Control systems and technologies are currently being implemented on the Sydney Trains network in a number of phases that will be discussed in this session: —
  • A summary of how the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system has been designed to suit TfNSW’s specific needs on the Sydney Trains network in delivering cost-effective and rapid deployment of safety improvements based on ETCS Level 1 technology, and also providing a clear migration path for future ETCS Level 2 deployment. —
  • A summary of how a Digital Train Radio System (DTRS) has been deployed across the same Sydney Trains network using GSM-R technology, and also provides a clear migration path for future ETCS Level 2 deployment. —
  • A discussion of current plans to begin the deployment of ETCS Level 2 on the Sydney Trains network, and the expected improvements in safety, reliability, capacity and lifecycle costs that this will bring.

The room will split into tables, where each table member will share their biggest challenge, before collectively deciding which issue to investigate in more detail. The table then elects a note taker the topic, it’s challenges and solutions during group discussion.
After 40 minutes, the facilitator of each table will then report back to the rest of the audience their problem and potential solutions.
