Cross River Rail Case Study: Lessons From Creating Operational Readiness For A Future Proof Rail Network Relying On ETCS and Automatic Train Operation Capability

At Cross River Rail, Simon Cook is heading up Qld Government’s efforts that act as the foundation for its intent to modernise its signalling systems and control environments. Through the staged rollout of ETCS which will be complimented by automation and digitisation, a vision for improved safety, productivity and capacity management across Qld Rail is being charted. In this session, Simon will cover experiences and lessons learned from:

  • Analyzing existing operational environment for changes critical to the success in the ETCS environment
  • Learning from international case studies around ATO roll out – dos and don’ts
  • Overcoming challenges with integrating legacy environments and systems with the modern signalling environment
  • Early implications of imminent changes of ETCS roll out to traditional staff skills and roles

"How Crossrail Delivered Complex Infrastructure Changes To Roll Out & Integrate ETCS L2 Across A Shared Network of Operators, Stakeholders and Legacy Systems"

The session attached is presented by Gary Rogers, ETCS Project Manager, from Crossrail (UK). The session covers 'How Crossrail Delivered Complex Infrastructure Changes To Roll Out & Integrate ETCS L2 Across A Shared Network of Operators, Stakeholders and Legacy Systems'.

As of 2021, Gary is proud to have helped the Elizabeth Line in Crossrail (running from Heathrow to Paddington) roll out ETCS L2 signalling which integrates well into the central network using CBTC. Having to overcome challenges with legacy systems on shared lines with Great Western Railways and Heathrow Express services, Gary will take you through the key decisions that enabled a cohesive and united push towards making the role of ETCS a reality in the rail network:

- Overcoming challenges with integrating CBTC, legacy and ETCS infrastructure and technology used across shared lines sitting on the Western Crossrail rail network

- Taking new approaches to project management to develop a shared vision and understanding of the future of the rail network

- Leveraging comprehensive simulation capabilities to test ETCS delivery effects across the end-to-end rail operations – from ground staff all the way to the operations centre
